Information about new activations of SharePoint Online Broadcast

  • As of today, existing Microsoft Online Services customers who have never created a SharePoint Online PowerPoint Broadcast site collection will no longer be able to create a new site collection of this type.

However, if you currently use this site collection type, you will be able to continue to broadcast PowerPoint presentations using your existing Broadcast site collection without interruption. You will not, however, be able to create new PowerPoint Broadcast site collections.

SharePoint Online Broadcast is duplicative of functionality that is more effectively delivered by Microsoft Lync. If you were planning to begin using Broadcast, you should instead use Lync to deliver PowerPoint presentations. You may also use the Office Broadcast Service, a free service within PowerPoint 2010 that also allows you to share your presentations over the internet (learn more here).

For more information about how to share a PowerPoint presentation with Lync, please see the Lync quickstart topic “Share your desktop or program.”

We do encourage customers who currently use the SharePoint Online Broadcast feature to begin investigating Lync Online, as this product delivers a much richer conferencing and instant messaging experience.
