Before the upgrade to Office 365, each user has one Live@edu account that provides access to services such as email powered by Exchange Online, SkyDrive and Messenger.

During the upgrade, each Live@edu account becomes two separate accounts:

  • An Office 365 account, associated with your educational institution, that is used to access email.
  • A personal Microsoft account that retains access to SkyDrive, Messenger, and other Microsoft services, and is not used to access email.

To understand the differences, watch Two Accounts after Live@edu Upgrade to Office 365 (video).

Office 365 account

Here’s what Outlook Web App will look like in Office 365. All the user's Live@edu email will be available from this page.

  • This account only has access to Office 365 services.
  • The user name and password for the Office 365 account will be the same as it was for Live@edu.
    • While the Office 365 account and personal Microsoft account can both be accessed with the same Live@edu user name and password after the upgrade, the accounts are not associated with one another and changes to one account will not affect the other.

  • Administrators can manage these Office 365 accounts.
  • There is no co-branding for this account.
  • There is no advertising displayed.
  • This account can be accessed using the following URLs:

Personal Microsoft account

Here’s what the page looks like when the user signs in to SkyDrive using their personal Microsoft account.

There are several important differences between this personal account and the user's previous Live@edu account:

  • The Microsoft account is now a personal account for each user:
    • This account still provides access to their SkyDrive data, Windows Live Messenger contacts, and other Microsoft services.
    • If the user was a contact for someone else through Messenger, they will still be a contact.
  • This account uses the same user name and password as the Live@edu account did.
    • While the Office 365 account and personal Microsoft account can both be accessed with the same Live@edu user name and password after the upgrade, the accounts are not associated with one another and changes to one account will not affect the other.
  • This account can't be administered by the educational institution:
    • Administrators can't reset the password for the account.
    • Administrators can't delete the account.
    • The standard header is used no matter which Microsoft service the user accesses, with no co-branding.  The header gives users access to People, SkyDrive, and Calendar.
    • Advertising will be displayed on this account unless a student is determined to be under 13.
  • This account can be accessed at https://skydrive.live.com/.
