Why is Microsoft Office 365 ending support for the 32-bit Directory Synchronization (DirSync) tool?

The 32-bit and 64-bit DirSync tools are built on different platforms. To continue innovating and delivering new features that synchronize on-premises Active Directory with Office 365, we need to focus our efforts on a single tool. The 64-bit tool is built on a more modern platform and our customers are telling us they prefer the 64-bit tool.

When did Office 365 end support for the 32-bit DirSync?

Effective 1 January 2013, service requests with Office 365 support regarding the 32-bit tool can no longer be opened.  The 32-bit DirSync tool will continue to operate and synchronize your on-premises Active Directory with Office 365 after this date.

Will I always be able to synchronize directories using the 32-bit DirSync tool, even if it’s not supported?

For the moment, yes. However, after 31 January 2014, Office 365 will block connections from the 32-bit DirSync tool.

Are there any differences between the 64-bit and 32-bit DirSync tools?

The two tools work in the same fashion and any jobs you have built with the 32-bit DirSync tool will continue to work with the 64-bit tool. The differences are entirely internal to the tools.

Where can I download the 64-bit DirSync tool?
