but they will NOT be able to use Lync as there is only client access available (ie no Lync Web)

As Benoit said, you do not need run any application to set up Mac computers for Office 365.
You could use Office 2011 to work with Office 365 better. More details are illustrated in the link.
Any update for this issue? Have you set up configuration for these MAC systems?
We are curently evaluating Lync Online and lack of Mac support is a big issue. We need to be able to invite guests to our meetings from outside of our company and if they have a Mac there is no way to do this. Is there any ETA on when there will be a browser based Lync client for Mac?
