I have two users (both are on Macs) who when they attach jpg files to emails they become embedded in the body of the email and the attachments are not available. No paper clip, no download options, nothing. When I open the same email on my phone I see the attachments both embedded and as attachments that I can download, etc. There's nothing wrong with the files, they are less than 1 mg and it consistently happens. Why are these not coming across as attachments. My same user reported last week she had an email go across with only one attachment. I tried sending her a test email from OWA and she could only see the attachments from her phone, not OWA. And neither of these users has the Outlook client (which as far as I'm concerned shouldn't be a requirement if OWA is truly supposed to be a complete email solution!)

  • Hi Xenia,

I understand that when you writing an email, you can’t add a photo (jpg file) as an attachment to the email, is it correct?
If this is the case, I’d like to confirm with you first.
    1. Which kind of browser you use, safari, IE, Chrome, or else?
    2. Please check the version of your browser on MAC and update your browser to the latest version. You may refer to the link below for the supported browser for OWA and Exchange Online.

In additional, you want to add a photo as attachment, you may click add attachment, and then select the photo you want to add as attachment.
If I misunderstand the issue, please feel free to post the detailed information about the issue, such as the screen shot you send email and when open the email via IPhone.

    Thanks,
    Eric Sun

  • She is using a supported browser and attaching the document correctly and I am using IE9 but the attachment shows up as embedded in OWA and as an attachment when I check email on my Android phone.

  • Hi Xenia,

    Thanks for your update.
Based on my test (IE 9/Safari + Windows OS), I add the attachment as the screen shot shows.
When add a picture attachment, click attach file.

If I click insert picture, the result may like this.

Please try to use IE9 to see if it works.
If the issue persists, could you please provide the screed shot to us for further troubleshooting?

    Thanks,

  • Are you saying my Mac users have to use IE9 to make this work? I thought this solution supported use by Safari users.

When using IE9, have the issue been resolved?
In safari, you may click the attachment in safari then click attach to see if it works. In additional, could you please give us a screen shot of the adding jpg file as attachment for further troubleshooting?

    Thanks,

  • Here is the latest update from the user..

The weird thing that is happening between me and other users is that I will email photos and they either show up as an x or are are embedded in the body of the email, but when they reply back to me the same photos show up as attachments in the reply email.

  • Hi Xenia,

Before moving on, I want to confirm with you first.
    1. You use IE9 send emails, in which way you send the photos, as an attachment or insert picture?
    2. In safari, how did the users send the photos to you, as an attachment or insert picture?
Based on my experience, the email you send out, you can decide the photo as an attachment or show in the body of the email, just as my previous post shows. The photo shows up as an X may the browser block the picture due to security protect or the internet issue.
When you received an email, the photo in the email shows as an attachment or in the body of the email, this decided by the sender, not the recipient.

    Thanks,

  • The user is correctly using the attachment function not embedding the picture in the email.

  • Hi Xenia,

Based on my test, in safari, when we send an email, we add the attachment by click the attachment>attach the file (photo file), this will send out the email with an attachment, the photo file will not embeds in the message.

For this issue you are experiencing, I want to confirm with you the following information.
    1. When you say emails are embedding in the body of your email, are your referring that the photo is inserted in the your email body when you click Insert Attachment, or the photo is embedding in the recipients’ email body when they receive the email? Do you mean when you send an email as an attachment (photo file), the users (MAC users) will receive the email with the photo file embeds in the email, not as an attachment? If there is any misunderstanding, please correct me on time. In additional, does this happened to all users or just some users?
    2. In general, when the users reply to your email, the email format may not change if they just click reply button. So I want to know, when they reply your email, did they send the photo file as an attachment or just click the reply button?

Please make sure when sending an email with photo file, click attachment>attach instead of insert picture.
In additional, the emails you send out with the photo file shows as X or embeds in the email, the photo shows as an X maybe a network issue. If you send the emails with an attachment, then the uses will receive the email with an attachment. If they reply to you with an attachment instead of inserting the file to the email, you will receive the email as an attachment too.

    Thanks,
    Eric Sun
