When I "Meet Now" using Lync 2010 or schedule a meeting using Outlook 2010 "Online Meeting", the URL link that gets generated for joining the meeting fails to allow users to join and gives the following error message in the browser:
Machine:SN20B02FES02BrowserId:Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/5.0)Join attempted at:6/13/2012 10:01:23 AMError:Organizer lookup timed out
I generated the URL by clicking on the "Join Information and Meeting Options" link from Lync. It also fails for scheduled meetings in outlook using the Online Meeting button. It does work if I invite other users who have Lync installed using the Invite by Name feature.
Thank you ahead of time for any help in resolving this issue.
Mindy
Update: I seem to have figured out the issue and I would like to know if there is a good work around.
Background
Question
I have verified that a work around is to change the login names to not contian periods. I would rather not remove the periods from the login names. Is there an alternative solution that will allow me to have login names with a period in them but still have the online meeting URLs work?
Thank you,

Hi Mindy,
Thank you for your post.
Based on your description, I understand that when users click the meeting URL to join online meeting, the error "AMError:Organizer lookup "popped up. If there are any misunderstand, please feel free to let me know.
Since the error message indicates "time out", I would like to suggest you change to another network and then join the online meeting by clicking the meeting link.
If the above do not help, could you please help me to clarify the following things:
1.Do all attendees have this issue or just some specific attendees?
2.Do the issue persist if your change to another Office 365 account(meeting organizer) to schedule the online meeting?
If there are any updates, please feel free to let me know.
Thanks, Jolin Qiao
Thank you for your reply. Your description of the problem is correct. The following are in answer to your questions--
* The problem occurs with all meeting organizers and all attendees as long as they are trying to connect using the URL link to connect. It does work for users who connect directly using the "Invite by Name" and have Lync installed on their systems.
* I tried from another network and four different machines with the same result. I also tried to turn off the firewall without luck.
* The error is not a generic browser error. It appears to come from the Microsoft Lync server. I have attached the screenshot to my original message.
Thanks for your help.
Update: I tried to create a meeting using the interface in the following URL http://sched.lync.com but I get the same error message when I create a meeting and click on the generated link from the online interface.
Thank you for your response. I will change our login names and keep our current email addresses that contain the period as aliases. Hopefully this thread will help others identify the cause of this error if it comes up again.
I'm facing the exact same error message, but it has nothing to do with periods in the user names. All but a small handful of users in our organization can create online meetings (all can join meetings created by others), for the remaining few the error is always the Time Out when trying to resolve the organizaer.
All users in our organization have firstname.lastname type usernames: mine looks like meet.lync.com/.../YQ5M6AUY and fails, another user's looks like meet.lync.com/.../L0PTMJGLand works.
