We are using Office 365 with E3 licences and Windows 7 Professional on the desktops.

Recently one of our users left the company and was replaced by another person. This new user is using the same PC, but is obviously logging onto Office 365 with a different name.

We released the licences within the Office 365 console from the old user and re-allocated them to the new user.

The new user was having issues with all the Office applications and the word "un-licenced" appeared at the top of the application window.

We double checked that the new user had the correct licences allocated in Office 365 and then tried to set up the desktop again by going to Settings / Install & Manage Software and then running the three options - Office, Lync and Desktop setup.

We finished with the message "You are ready to use Office 2013 ...." However, The problem still exists and we now get a dialogue box when we try to open an Office application, as follows:

"Background installation ran into a problem. Please make sure that you're still connected to the internet ................... We'll automatically resume installation as soon as possible."

The installation is getting nowhere, even after a long weekend.

I feel inclined to reinstall the operating system and start again, which is going to be a real pain. Does anyone have any other suggestions? So we don't get caught again, can anyone explain why this may have happened in the first place. We seem to have the correct number of licences applied to the correct user.

Appreciate any input.

Thanks,

I can see these distribution groups in office 365 admin console.

Dirsync is currently being used in the domain, but for whatever reason several distribution groups were not deleted from office 365 when they were deleted from Active Directory.

I have tried to run 'Remove-DistributionGroup' in powershell and I am unsuccessful. The following error comes up:

The action 'Remove-DistributionGroup', 'Identity', can't be performed on the object '' because the object
is being synchronized from your on-premises organization. This action should be performed on the object in your on-premises organization.

Obviously it does not exist in Active Directory anymore but still exists in office 365. I do not want to disable DirSync in order to delete these ghost distribution groups.

I have also tried to delete these ghost distribution groups from the admin console in office 365 and I receive the same error as when I try to delete them with powershell.

Is there a way to disable dirsync for one item only? Or is there any other way I might be able to delete this distribution group which is no longer in use, but still show up in office 365 only?

Thank you, your comments and help are appreciated.

how do I get to and edit my website?

There used to be an "Edit Website" link that I can no longer find.
I have manually created tasks on SP Online. I click Sync to Outlook and check the Sync Tasks box but get the error below:

We weren't able to sync your tasks. This could be because your mailbox is on an Exchange server that isn't supported for syncing tasks. Please contact your administrator for more help

We are using a clean installation of Exchange 2013 on-premises with Outlook 2010.

Calendar, contacts and documents successfully sync to Outlook.

We have (theoretically) configured OAuth Trust and Service Permission on Exchange, though this does seem to be for SP on-premises with Exchange on-premises.

Can anyone suggest any resolutions?

Thanks in advance

Tim
