Created contacts get deleted automatically

This question has suggested answer(s) This question has suggested answer(s)

I am using Outlook 2013 and when I created a new contact and save it I can see it in the 'People' view of Outlook and then it disappears.

I changed my password today and read mail on my phone etc but I have never seen this before.

What might be causing it?

  • Hi Rupert,

    To narrow down this issue, I’d like to confirm the following information:
    1. What Office 365 Plan are you using, Small Business, Midsize, Enterprise or Home?
    2. If you are using Office 365 Small Business, Midsize or Enterprise, could you try creating the contact in the People tab in OWA (http://mail.office365.com) to see whether the same issue occurs?
    3. Do you mean the issue only occurs to the newly created contact?

    With the information above, we will dig deeper into this issue.

    Thanks,
    Xinyu

  • I think we on Midsize.

    If I create a contact on my phone it sticks. If I log in to webmail and create a contact it sticks.

    If I create a contact in Outlook 2013 under Windows 8.1 it 'disappears' as soon as Outlook sync Contacts. I can see it disappear in 'People' as soon as the status bar shows the sync occur.

    The exact same thing happens in Outlook 2010 on Windows 7

    I have deleted and remade my profile. No change.

    I notice I have a lot of this when it is doing this trick;

  • this message is appearing in Sync Issues in Outlook.

  • Xinyu do you have any suggestions as to what might be happening? It definitely appears to be when syncing the local contacts on my machine(s) to the Server.

    I can create contacts in Mac Address Book (connected to Exchange acccount), in Office365 on the Web, on my phone but not in Outlook 2010 or 2013. Why might that be?

  • To be precise I can create them in Contacts but they get moved to the local failures immediately I create them and Outlook performs a sync.

  • Hi Rupert,

    We really appreciate the updates.

    I noticed that you can create the new contacts in Outlook Web App (OWA) and mobile phone, but not in Outlook 2010 and 2013 clients. The issue is a little bit strange. Sorry that we still cannot determine the root cause of the issue until now. Therefore, could you help me check the following points to narrow down the root cause of the issue?
    1. Could you add another Office 365 account in these two computers to check if the issue persists?
    2. Please check if the issue persists when Outlook client is in online mode (not the cache mode).
    3. I would like to know if the newly created contacts can be synced to Outlook 2010/2013 client after you create them in OWA or mobile phone.

    Best Regards,
    Anna

  • I have turned off caching and when i save a new contact i get this;

    Usually this error message occurs when your mailbox has exceeded the size limit established by your administrator. Or, your mailbox has exceeded the mailbox size restriction of two terabytes.

    To eliminate this issue, archive or delete messages until the size of the mailbox is less than the limitation imposed by the administrator or is less than two terabytes, whichever is smaller.

    My mailbox is 35MB. So this is a bogus message I think.

    Yes, contacts created on my phone immediately appear on my laptop Outlook.

    How do I create another account ?

  • One question I have is why is this only occurring with contacts, do you think?

  • I have deleted the OST on my laptop and allowed it to recreate another. Same problem. I make a new contact. Outlook syncs contacts and POOF the new contact disappears.

    this is driving me gently nuts.

  • Does any of this mean anything:

  • Hi Rupert,

    We really appreciate the updates.

    Generally, if you created a contact in Outlook client, and it synced to Office 365 server, after that, Office 365 server delete the new contact, so the contact disappear in Outlook client. In this situation, we can find the deleted contact in Deleted Items folder or Recover Deleted Items folder. Otherwise, if the contacts are deleted directly in Outlook client, we cannot find the deleted contacts in Deleted Items folder or Recover Deleted Items folder. Therefore, to determine if the contacts are deleted in Office 365 server or in Outlook client directly, we can check if the deleted contacts are in Deleted Items folder or Recover Deleted Items folder.

    Based on the current situation, I provide a test account for you via private message. You can add it in the problematic computers to check if the issue persists. Also you can provide your test account for me, I can test it from my side. Moreover, if possible, please add your Office 365 account in a fresh-installed computer to check if the issue persists. This can help us narrow down the root cause of the issue.

    Thanks for your time and efforts in this issue.

    Best Regards,
    Anna

  • If i create a contact on my local machine it is 'erased' when contacts are updated.

    when this occurs i see this in the 'sync issues' folder;

    19:18:23 Moved a message that failed synchronization to 'Local Failures'. Message subject -> 'bummer time'. You can view this message in your offline folder only.

    there is nothing in the Deleted Items

    What looks like the contact i made is in the 'Local Failures' folder.

    I cannot see a 'Recover Deleted Items' folder I am afraid.

  • Why do you think I am being prevented from creating a contact when local caching is off? Surely in that mode I am operating the same way as the OWA ?

    I get this if i try and create a contact in non-cached mode

    "Usually this error message occurs when your mailbox has exceeded the size limit established by your administrator. Or, your mailbox has exceeded the mailbox size restriction of two terabytes.

    To eliminate this issue, archive or delete messages until the size of the mailbox is less than the limitation imposed by the administrator or is less than two terabytes, whichever is smaller."
