Out of Office365-Lync Federation to other companies using Lync (e.g. microsoft.com, swisscom.com or bfu.ch) doesn't work. Is this a bug or a feature?

Greetings from Switzerland

  • Hi Peter, check the eventlog of your Lync Edge server. There you should see an entry like this:

    Device: SERVER MESO LYN-02

    Component: LS Protocol Stack

    Severity: Error

    Message:

Federated partner sipfed.online.lync.com has sent a significant number of messages that have resulted in domain validation failures. There have been 9 such failures in the last 600 minutes. There have been 13 errors in total. This can happen when messages are sent to local users that don't exist, messages are sent from domains that the partner isn't allowed to send from, or when the partner sends messages destined to domains that this organization isn't responsible for.

To solve your issue check if you set the CSHostingProvider correctly on your LYNC Server:

Get-CSHostingProvider. If this is empty you have not set LyncOnline as CSHostingProvider.

You can set LyncOnline as CSHostingProvider using Lync Shell:

    New-CSHostingProvider –identity LyncOnline –ProxyFqdn sipfed.online.lync.com –Enabled $True

Wait 5 Minutes and then logon again with your Lync Client. Federation to LyncOnline now should work for you as expected.

  • I guess these companies operate Lync only inside their own intranet and thus the service is not accessible from outside. It's the same in my company. Based on our policies I can use instant messaging only inside the company, but I can set up Live Meetings with external partners.

  • No, this is not the case. I'm the operator of bfu.ch myself and I can confirm, that we do have open federation configured there; meaning, that we can federate with everybody without requiring federation confirmation.
